Erythema multiforme

  • Immune-mediated, self-limiting mucocutaneous condition
  • Skin eruption of various morphologies (hence the name): macules, papules, vesicles, targetoid lesions (central dusky area of epidermal necrosis surrounded by lighter oedematous margin)
  • Associated with infections (especially Mycoplasma pneumoniae, HSV), drugs (sulfa drugs, beta lactams, phenytoin)
Treatment
  • Often not required
  • Withdraw/stop offending agents or treat the underlying cause
  • Supportive care: oral antihistamine and/or topical steroids if pruritus and pain
  • Fluid and nutritional replacements if severe/reduced oral intake
